Detailed 4-Day Ol Pejeta & Samburu Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Ol Pejeta Wildlife Conservancy (Sweetwaters)

Your adventure begins early in Nairobi. After a briefing, depart in your 4×4 safari Jeep for a scenic drive north through lush highlands and coffee estates toward Nanyuki.

Arrive at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a 90,000-acre wildlife sanctuary nestled on the Laikipia Plateau, with uninterrupted views of Mount Kenya. This conservancy is famed for its remarkable rhino conservation work and its sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees — the only one of its kind in Kenya.

Enjoy your first game drive in the afternoon, where you might spot elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, and the rare black rhino. Visit the Rhino Information Centre, and if time allows, meet the northern white rhinos under ranger supervision — a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Highlights:

  • Game drives in Ol Pejeta Conservancy

  • Visit to the Chimpanzee Sanctuary

  • Learn about rhino conservation

Accommodation:
Stay overnight at Sweetwaters Serena Camp or a similar lodge overlooking a waterhole frequented by wildlife.

Day 2: Ol Pejeta – Samburu Game Reserve

After breakfast, continue your journey north to Samburu Game Reserve, crossing the equator at Nanyuki. The landscape changes dramatically — acacia woodlands give way to rugged hills, dry riverbeds, and the shimmering Ewaso Nyiro River that sustains life in this semi-arid paradise.

Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch and later set off for an afternoon game drive. Samburu is home to species found nowhere else in Kenya — the Samburu Special Five. Watch elephants cooling off in the river, lions resting under the shade, and graceful oryx and giraffes grazing against a backdrop of dramatic escarpments.

Highlights:

  • Afternoon game drive along the Ewaso Nyiro River

  • Spot the Samburu Special Five

  • Unique semi-desert landscape photography

Accommodation:
Spend the night at Ashnil Samburu Camp, Samburu Sopa Lodge, or an equivalent mid-luxury camp.

Day 3: Full Day in Samburu Game Reserve

Enjoy a full day exploring Samburu National Reserve. Begin with a sunrise game drive when predators are most active. You may witness elephants crossing the river or leopards retreating into the rocky outcrops.

Later, visit a Samburu village to meet the proud Samburu people — close relatives of the Maasai — known for their rich traditions and colorful beadwork. Their way of life, deeply intertwined with the wilderness, offers a glimpse into Kenya’s cultural heritage.

Return to your lodge for lunch and relax by the pool, then embark on an evening game drive for more thrilling encounters.

Highlights:

  • Morning and evening game drives

  • Cultural visit to a Samburu village

  • Birdwatching and photography opportunities

Optional Experience:
Add a sundowner drive or bush dinner under the African stars — a magical ending to your Samburu adventure.

Day 4: Samburu – Nairobi

After breakfast, enjoy one final early morning game drive, soaking in the rugged beauty and tranquility of Samburu. Later, depart for Nairobi with picnic lunches en route.

Arrive in the city by evening, marking the end of your 4-day Ol Pejeta & Samburu Safari — a journey through Kenya’s most diverse landscapes, rich in wildlife and culture.
